Dry needling is a safe and effective technique for the treatment of muscular pain and myofascial dysfunction. It is a newer technique and is effective to rid muscles of trigger points (tight painful knots) which are believed to cause dysfunction and pain. Dry needling is a technique similar to acupuncture. It utilizes similar tools and techniques in order to provide a beneficial response. Dry needling has been shown to be effective in decreasing muscle tone, alleviating trigger points and improving tendon related conditions such as tennis and golfer’s elbow. The act of placing the small needle into the damaged tissue stimulates a healing response of that tissue. Dry needling can also be used in conjunction with electrical stimulation to improve muscle tone while decreasing spasm and pain. Dry needling, although around for many years, has now become one of the foremost effective treatments for treating many conditions in the active population.
